Nigeria Nets For Life Launch

On February 28, 2008, NetsforLife® was launched in Nigeria with an event in Peace Park in the capital city, Abuja. 

NetsforLife® will distribute 82,500 long-lasting insecticide-treated nets in Nigeria through the Anglican Church delivery network, with Christian Aid serving as an implementing partner.

Malaria is a major public health threat in Nigeria, with more than 2.6 million reported cases in 2005.  Almost half of those cases reported were among children under five years old.  Malaria is the cause of almost 25% of infant deaths and 30% of childhood mortality cases in the country.

Present at the launch were representatives from three corporate NetsforLife® sponsors: Coca-Cola Africa Foundation, ExxonMobil Nigeria, and Standard Chartered Bank,  Keynote speeches were given by Mrs. Irene Ubah of the Coca-Cola Africa Foundation, Mr. Cyril Odu, CFP of ExxonMobil Nigeria, and Mr. Christopher Knight, CEO of Standard Chartered Bank. Professor Dora Akunyili, Director General of NAFDAC gave a passionate plea for malaria prevention and applauded the launch. Archbishop Benjamin Kwashi described the work of the church and the hope for malaria-free communities in Nigeria.
