Malawi has a predominantly agrarian-based economy, with 90% of the population living in rural areas. Agricultural products—primarily tobacco—account for 80% of export revenues. The current government has been successful in rooting out corruption and establishing sound fiscal policies which bode well for the country’s future. However, a persistent drought and the rising HIV/AIDS prevalence rate (currently 14.2% of adults are infected) threaten progress.

Malaria is a major public health problem in Malawi, as all of the country is at risk of transmission due to the tropical climate. Approximately three million outpatient and 86,000 inpatient cases were treated in 2003.
