People Trained and Sensitized in Malaria Awareness and Prevention

Malaria agents: 75

Population of vulnerable group: 21,320

Namibia is rich in mineral resources, but the United Nations Development Program’s 2005 Human Development Report indicated that approximately 35% of the population lives on one dollar per day and 56% live on two dollars per day.

Malaria is the leading cause of illness and death among children under the age of five. HIV/AIDS has crippled Namibia, causing more than 50% of all deaths of people between the ages of 15-49. Yet, malaria surpasses HIV/AIDS as the leading cause of death among all ages in five of Namibia’s northern regions. Approximately half the country’s population – one million people – live in malaria prone areas.
