In April 2010, NetsforLife® counted down the days until people around the world commemorated the global committment to eradicate malaria.

This year's World Malaria Day is particularly important as it highlights the international malaria communities' effort to meet the 2010 targets of protection and treatment to all people at risk of contracting malaria.

Join NetsforLife® in its work by taking a moment to learn more about global efforts to fight malaria:

World Health Organization (WHO) annually publishes a World Malaria Report. The 2009 report chronicles an estimated 243 million cases of malaria, which led to nearly 863,000 deaths in 2008. It is also cautiously optimistic about new opportunities for large-scale malaria control resulting from the advent of long-lasting insecticidal nets, artemisinin-based combination therapy and a revival of support for indoor residual spraying of insecticide. To download the WHO report go to: http://whqlibdoc.who.int/publications/2009/9789241563901_eng.pdf

The Roll Back Malaria (RBM) Partnership is a global framework to implement coordinated action against malaria. The Partnership is comprised of more than 500 partners, including malaria endemic countries, their bilateral and multilateral development partners, the private sector, nongovernmental and community-based organizations, foundations, and research and academic institutions. The President's Malaria Initiative (PMI) represents an historic five-year expansion of U.S. Government (USG) resources to fight malaria in the region most affected by the disease. The President committed an additional $1.2 billion in malaria funding to this Initiative with the goal of reducing malaria-related deaths by 50 percent in 15 focus countries.  For more information: http://www.pmi.gov/about/index.html.   NetsforLife® is currently working on PMI projects in Angola and Ghana.
