Botswana has the highest HIV/AIDS prevalence in the world, with close to 40% of the adult population infected.
People living with HIV/AIDS are at a greater risk of dying from malaria if infected. With your help, NetsforLife® is working to protect the people of Botswana from malaria.
* Data on Botswana based on figures from WHO’s World Malaria Report 2008.
Since independence in 1966, Botswana has maintained one of the highest economic growth rates in the world. It has combined its rich natural resources (diamonds and gold) with sound fiscal management and 40 years of peaceful civilian government free of corruption.
However, this security is threatened by the second-highest HIV/AIDS prevalence in the world, with close to 40% of the adult population infected.
As 40% to 50% of the population is exposed to the risk of malaria, the disease is a major public health problem in Botswana.
It is prevalent throughout much of the country; however, the northern part has the highest transmission rate, accounting for more than 80% of all cases. The high numbers of people living with HIV/AIDS, whose immune systems already are compromised, are at a greater risk of dying from malaria if infected.
Additionally, it is estimated that families spend more than a quarter of their stretched yearly income to treat malaria. Subsequently, this loss of income affects the family as well as the productivity of the country.
NetsforLife® works with the Diocese of Botswana, part of the Anglican Province of Central Africa. The diocese has taken a leading role in caring for people dying from HIV/AIDS and supporting families and orphans.
NetsforLife® is working in 28 villages and targeting approximately 72,350 people in two districts in Botswana: Ngami and Okavango. 100% of the Ngami population is at risk of infection.
Some partners of the program include the Ministry of Health, the National Malaria Control Program, Clinton Foundation, Hindu Society, International Foundation of the Red Cross and UNICEF.
