ExxonMobil

ExxonMobil is no newcomer to Africa.  With thousands of employees and additional workers associated with the company in Africa, ExxonMobil is one of the largest private foreign investors on the continent, and it is an area of significant growth.

In fact, over the last several years, Africa has grown to account for more than 25% of our net liquids production, the largest growth area in our production portfolio.

Impact of Malaria in Africa

As a major investor in Africa, we witness first-hand the health and economic impacts of malaria on our workforce, their families and the communities where we operate.  We see how malaria traps families, communities and countries in a continuous cycle of disease and poverty.

In 2000, the ExxonMobil Foundation launched the Africa Health Initiative, which focuses on African countries where we have significant operations.

As of 2009, we have spent more than $50 million to help fund programs to fight malaria in excess of 20 African countries, making us the largest non-pharmaceutical corporate donor to malaria research and development efforts and the largest corporate donor to the President's Malaria Initiative (PMI).

Saving Lives with NetsforLife®

Collaboration and partnership are at the heart of ExxonMobil’s approach to community investment activities because we know we cannot solve the problem of malaria alone.

NetsforLife® provides a unique opportunity for faith-based organizations, multi-national corporations and private foundations to combine their comparative advantages and skills in an operational partnership to save lives.

ExxonMobil and NetsforLife® began working together in 2006 and assisted with the 2007 program launch in Angola, where 1.4 million cases of malaria were reported in 2002; and in Nigeria in February 2008, where malaria is the cause of almost 25% of infant deaths and 30% of childhood mortality cases in the country.

Monitoring & Evaluation

ExxonMobil has also championed and funded a monitoring and evaluation module for NetsforLife®.

In the energy industry we operate under the belief that “If you can’t measure it, you can’t manage it.”  We apply the same principle to malaria and believe we can make the fight against this disease as integrated and efficient as our business operations through systematic and standardized measures of performance.
