Starr International Foundation

The Starr Foundation was established in the United States in 1955 by Cornelius Vander Starr, who founded C.V. Starr & Co. and other insurance and financial services concerns in 1919.

When Mr. Starr died, he left his companies and his foundation in the hands of his partner Maurice R. Greenberg and other executives to pursue educational, medical, humanitarian, cultural and other charitable purposes.

About Starr International Foundation

Starr International Foundation was established in 2006 in Switzerland by Mr. Starr’s former partners in his honor to support a broad range of educational, environmental, cultural, medical, humanitarian and other charitable institutions in Switzerland and around the world.

The foundation has received substantial contributions from The Starr International Charitable Trust which was established by Starr International Company, Inc. in 1971.

Supporting NetsforLife®'s unique partnership

Starr has provided $6 million for NetsforLife®, $4 million from the Swiss foundation and $2 million from the U.S.-based foundation.

Starr values projects with measurable impact and verified results. In the area of malaria prevention, NetsforLife®’s faith-based model is unique and has produced consistent positive results verified by monitoring and evaluation.

Using the distribution system in place, and managed by a partnership of  Episcopal Relief & Development and local Anglican churches, NetsforLife® is able to provide nets, and training for proper use of the nets, at the “end of the road” in remote villages that are otherwise underserved by international relief agencies.

In addition, Florence Davis, President of The Starr Foundation and Board member of the Starr International Foundation serves on the Executive Board of NetsforLife®, which meets several times each year.

Since 2007, Caroline Keeley, Program Officer and Head of Administration at the Starr International Foundation (Switzerland), has served on the NetsforLife® Steering Committee, which advises and reviews program results and budgets on a quarterly basis.
